Week 7: The client

Our client will be Dennis Lever.

He is 70 years of age and has recently suffered a stroke due to a small hole in his heart. By keeping his body healthy and active, this will no longer be a problem. Dennis’ short term goal is to loose around 5 kg to get his overall weight under 80 kg. He currently plays golf twice a week and attends a half hour PT session each week, however we are going implement some more vigorous exercise to help him loose this weight within the 6 week intervention.

Initially we thought about giving our client slow, gradual changes starting with walking and then progressing into running to ensure that he has a smooth transition. While walking doesn’t seem like a beneficial form of exercise, it has been proved to help maintain a healthy weight and strengthen bones and muscles. We have also decided that attending gym classes may be a fun alternative to a walk or jog while still effectively losing weight.

The interventions that we will introduce to our client will include cardiovascular training followed by stretching to help muscles remain loose and healthy. These activities will include, walking/jogging and gym classes such a water aerobics. A survey will also be filled out at the end of each week to see how much progress Dennis has made and how the intervention is working for him, (too hard or too easy).

Because of Dennis’ condition we will ease into the program by starting of with simple, moderate intensity training to ensure he doesn’t acquire any injuries. From there we will gradually increase the intensity and the amount of exercise in the program.

From here we will finalize the intervention and implement it into the clients life. After that we will record the results through a survey our client will complete at the end of each week which will provide us with our final results.

Week 6: Identifying the challenge

How to change a life?

The assessment task is to implement a 6 week health intervention for a client of your choice.

I am interested to see how quickly weight can be lost and to research the most efficient way to do this. I am also excited to see how this impacts the clients life and how it improves their health and attitude towards exercise.

So far we have found that exercise has a large impact on weight loss and by doing physical activity at least 2 times a week can hugely benefit your body. It has been proved that cardiovascular exercise is the most efficient for burning body fat and loosing weight. Professor Olson from the University of California stated that “Regular moderate- to high-intensity aerobic exercise has the greatest impact on reducing ab fat — the dangerous fat that ups your risk of diabetes and heart disease.”
